Southern Cross Austereo Cairns

The new Cairns office for Southern Cross Austereo replaced a facility built in the pre-digital era. The old office had disconnected spaces which meant that teams were split, and there was a general lack of amenity and daylight.

A key aim for the new offices was for all staff to occupy an open plan work space so that teams could be together.

The arrangement of internal meeting rooms and support spaces was designed to allow easy access to the on-air studios.

The on-air studios and production spaces are grouped together in the front of house, all with windows and views.

A large staff breakout with adjoining kitchen enables all staff to share one social space, which doubles as a venue for entertaining clients and suppliers.

Materials and colours reflect far north Queensland themes: studios are clad with Spotted Gum timber battens while carpets, acoustic wall tiles and ceiling battens adopt the intense blues and greens of the tropical landscape.
